Holidu, the vacation rental search engine, has compiled a list of the most popular haunted tourist attractions in France. Our region seems to be a true hub of terror with 4 places on the total list. Here are the haunted spots near us. In first place, we find the Château de Fougeret, in the town of Queaux (Vienne). "The Château de Fougeret is the most haunted castle in France and the most popular. Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, it is located in the town of Queaux, in Vienne. Over the years, this residence has welcomed many noble families. In the 20th century, it was even one of the must-see locations for grand bourgeois parties. Today you can visit it and even spend the night for the bravest. However, be careful, it is an immersive experience. No central heating and very rustic conditions, in addition to the voices and silhouettes of entities that have not yet left the castle..."Château de Fougeret hanté©Le Parisien

In 4th place, it's time for the Castle of Commarque in Eyzies (Dordogne) to show its face

"Certainly, Nouvelle-Aquitaine is a region that every thrill-seeker must visit! Just below the top three, the Castle of Commarque is a true medieval gem. A strategic location during the Hundred Years' War, one might expect to hear stories of haunted soldiers along the ramparts, but that's not the case at all! Here, it's a horse that haunts the place. Legend has it that in the Middle Ages, the daughter of the Count of Commarque had a lover who was decapitated. His steed is still searching for his master in the castle ruins. Many visitors claim to hear the horse calling out for its rider, and some even say they've seen it. The adventurers who set out in search of it all met their end on the spot in very strange circumstances..."

Next up is Château de Puymartin in Marquay (Dordogne), ranking 6th

"Château de Puymartin was built in the 13th century, not far from Château de Commarque, and it is also haunted, not by a horse, but by the 'White Lady.' It's obviously not the same one as in Palavas, but the legend will give you chills. It's the ghost of Thérèse de Saint-Clar, who haunts the castle in the evening around midnight, walking on the stairs, in her room, and on the battlements... She was imprisoned for about fifteen years in the north tower of the castle as punishment for deceiving her husband. The door of the tower was walled up, and two bars at her window prevented her from escaping. Her food was brought to her through a small hatch, and she slept on a straw mattress. It sends shivers down your spine, doesn't it?"

Finally, last but not least: Château de Bonaguil in Saint-Front-sur-Lémance (Lot-et-Garonne)

"Another castle in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the Château de Bonaguil built in the 12th century is haunted not by one but by several ghosts. A very popular tourist spot, it is also visited by adventurers in search of the paranormal. The ghost of Marguerite de Fumel is among them. Graffiti in an unknown language and ghostly drawings have also been found on the walls. No historian or scientist has been able to decipher them... A team of paranormal research and investigation even conducted a study there, reporting disturbing facts: sensations of pressure on the body, burns, strange noises..."
