Golden Hour: A High-Flying Cultural Outing in Bordeaux
Like a prelude to spring. From March 6 to 17, the National Opera of Bordeaux unveils its new program with two additions to the repertoire, including a French premiere, for this three-part overview of contemporary choreographic creation.
Following the success of the new production of Giselle by Matali Crasset in December and before the Ballet embarks on a tour of China in May, don't miss Golden Hour, a triptypch program, featuring a piece by the choreographic duo León & Lightfoot with whom the National Opera of Bordeaux has had a fruitful collaboration for several years.
.
A first for Within the Golden Hour in France!
From the Royal Ballet in London to the New York City Ballet, as well as the Sadler's Wells Theatre and the National Ballet of Canada, Christopher Wheeldon showcases his choreographic vocabulary at the intersection of contemporary and neoclassical dance. WITHIN THE GOLDEN HOUR — revealing a luminous atmosphere dominated by red and playing with the sensation of Chinese shadows — seems to celebrate dusk with its fluidity and clarity of movement. This piece features seven couples who separate and blend, set to the music of Vivaldi and Ezio Bosso. Created by the Royal Ballet House, Within the Golden Hour will be presented for the first time in France at the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux.

Second entry in the repertoire: FRANK BRIDGE VARIATIONS (2005), by the Dutch dance star Hans Van Manen. In this piece for ten dancers, the choreographer moves on a dramatic and passionate terrain. The movements (walk, bourrée, waltz...) are considered satirical in the original score created by Britten, in this tribute piece to his teacher. The choreographic tables he creates are of an expressiveness and a staggering gestural invention, presenting atmospheres and characters some of which seem to come straight out of the Ring or Parsifal (Thomas Hahn - DANSER).

A virtuosity constantly at the service of aesthetics
Finally, the dancers from Bordeaux are performing a piece by Sol León and Paul Lightfoot that was particularly loved by the audience during the 8th edition of Quatre Tendances in 2021: STEP LIGHTLY, created in 1991. This piece marks the beginning of the collaboration between the two choreographers. The main influence on this ballet was the visceral and emotional singing of Bulgarian women's choir, singing traditional songs about the cycles of nature. This revival is part of a particularly fruitful collaboration between the company and the choreographic duo for the past few years. In 2023, two more of their creations also entered the repertoire of the Bordeaux National Ballet: Softly, As I Leave You and Sad Case.
