Bordeaux, the black sheep of veganism!

Most beautiful city in France according to the golden ratio, best tourist destination in the country, most attractive metropolis in the nation... The titles were numerous to praise our former Sleeping Beauty. While it has been blooming in recent years, it still remains dim when it comes to veganism. At least, that's what the ranking of the top 10 most vegan-friendly cities in France suggests, conducted by HelloFresh - world leader in meal kit deliveries - used data from TripAdvisor and VegOresto.

With a 5th place in the ranking of the most diverse cities in terms of restaurants, and a total of 2,519 food addresses, only 147 of them offer a vegan alternative. Not great!

Southern Cities: Vegan Heaven

In the table, which compares the number of restaurants in the city, the number of restaurants offering at least one vegan option, and the percentage of all restaurants offering vegan options, we find southern cities taking the top 6 spots. Antibes, Aix-en-Provence, Nîmes, Avignon, Nice, and Cannes stand out as vegan paradises while Paris, Bordeaux, and Lille don't even make the list. The sun-filled lands are definitely outshining us...

In which French city do vegans receive the warmest welcome? Well, it's in Antibes where you can find the largest number of restaurants offering at least one vegan option on the menu. Out of 500 total restaurants, 80 of them have a vegan-friendly menu, representing 1 restaurant out of 5, and this places the city of Antibes at the top spot in France! It is followed by Aix-en-Provence, with its 1,066 restaurants of which 143 offer a vegan option (13.4%) and Nîmes with 12.7% of restaurants providing a vegan option rounding out the top three.

Bordeaux is not the only major French city to be a bad seed. The French capital, which should set an example, surprisingly ranks last. Out of the approximately 44,000 restaurants and dining establishments in Paris, only 1,679 offer a vegan option on their menu. This accounts for a percentage of 2.8%, by far the lowest rate of all French cities.
