In its exclusive survey ranking French cities where women receive excellent healthcare, Femme Actuelle magazine places Bordeaux as the vice-champion just behind Bayonne and ahead of Lille. The podium is largely dominated by the Southwest, as Toulouse secures the fourth position as well.

Healthcare in Bordeaux: a solid and structured care offering

Several indicators explain this second position. Bordeaux boasts a density of 12.6 general practitioners per 10,000 residents, which is four points above the national average. The city also benefits from top-notch hospital facilities. The Bergonié Institute, a cancer treatment center, is ranked third nationally for breast cancer care according to the 2025 barometer.

The Bordeaux University Hospital now has a dedicated expert center for menopause, while the regional endometriosis network is supported by two centers recognized at the European level: the CHU and the Franco-European Multidisciplinary Endometriosis Institute (IFEM Endo) at the Tivoli-Ducos Clinic.

A municipal policy focused on equal access

While the quality of hospital facilities shines nationally, the city has also committed to fighting inequalities in access to healthcare. A first multiprofessional municipal health center is set to open in 2027 in a priority neighborhood, and a sixth school health center will join the existing network.

The municipality is also collaborating with around 15 local associations focused on women's health: addressing violence, post-cancer support, sexual health, raising awareness about endometriosis, and mental health. The Sustainable Health Village, launched in 2022, gathered 3,500 visitors.

A national ranking based on local criteria

To create this ranking, Femme Actuelle analyzed data at the municipal level, rather than at the departmental or regional level. Factors studied included: the density of general practitioners, gynecologists, nurses, and midwives, the number of maternity wards, and specialized services (such as endometriosis, menopause, and medical assistance for procreation), along with prevention actions and local health policies. The results were then compared with input from healthcare professionals, elected officials, and patients.

Last autumn, Bordeaux was actually recognized twice for its commitment to cancer prevention, receiving the Turquoise Trophy.

Here is the trophy for « Communities and Cancer Prevention » from the National Cancer Institute.
