A monumental tapestry inspired by Miyazaki has taken up residence at the Bordeaux Conservatory! This installation marks the fourth stage of an extraordinary cycle dedicated to the master of Japanese animation, following three other tapestries already unveiled at the Grand Théâtre, in the Salle des Fêtes at Grand Parc, and at the Pierre Veilletet library.

The artwork, made up of over 2,000 color blends, captures the enigmatic atmosphere of Howl's room, one of Miyazaki's most iconic characters, with stunning precision.

A monumental work to discover for free

Open to the public during the Conservatory's hours, this tapestry offers a rare immersion into the world of the Japanese director, regarded as one of the greatest animation filmmakers in history. It's a unique opportunity for the people of Bordeaux: the piece, woven using the centuries-old expertise of Aubusson, is part of a series of five monumental works loaned by the Cité Internationale de la Tapestry d’Aubusson and inspired by the iconic films of Miyazaki, including Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.

A whole cycle dedicated to Japan, leading up to the Night of the Conservatories

This exhibition kicks off an extensive cultural cycle dedicated to Japan for the 2025-2026 season. One of its highlights will be the Night of the Conservatories, scheduled for Friday January 30, 2026, fully themed around the Land of the Rising Sun.

The day before, on January 29 at 5:30 PM, the Mériadeck library will screen the documentary Tokyo-Aubusson, the Journey in.

Hayao Miyazaki Tapestry (52 min), directed by Sonia Moumen. The film traces the creation of the five Aubusson tapestries, weaving a poetic connection between Creuse craftsmanship and the imagination of Japanese cinema.
