A rainy summer 2024... and under the thresholds
Last summer's heavy rains did not spare the Aquitaine coastline. In Gujan-Mestras, Hume beach, known for its family-friendly atmosphere and calm waters, is experiencing a significant decline in water quality. With a rating of 67.65, it has now become one of the beaches classified as "to avoid", ranking 1790th out of 1858 in the national La Belle Plage 2025 ranking.
The Impact of Weather on Water Quality
Experts agree: heavy rains cause overflows in sewage systems, and also lead to agricultural runoff in sensitive areas. The result? Cloudy water that could be dangerous and isn't exactly suited for summer swims.
La Hume isn't an isolated case. 83 beaches rated "low risk" in 2024 are now "not recommended" in 2025. While the beaches labeled "to avoid" are slightly fewer than in 2024, it's often simply because they've been closed or not classified by health authorities. Fortunately, La Hume is the only beach in the Arcachon basin to fall into the red category. On the other hand, 3 other local beaches are not recommended: the canal at Gujan-Mestras, Graveyron at Audenge, and the Aménagée.d'Arès.

Increased Vigilance on the Basin
This declassification calls for caution. While the area maintains its natural charm and view of the basin, the Eaux & Rivières association strongly advises against swimming this season. An important piece of information for everyone!Vacationers are often drawn to this peaceful spot on the southern shore. It's important to note that the ARS, as the official health authority, has not issued any alerts regarding the Hume beach following its latest classification dated July 22.
In general: 75.89% of French beaches are classified as "recommended" or "low risk", but the overall trend is decreasing. With an increasingly unstable climate, the quality of bathing waters is becoming a major health and ecological indicator.
To avoid any risk of contamination, we remind you that the Lacanau beach has been voted the cleanest beach in France with the best quality of bathing waters ever recorded.
