The Inauguration of the Simone Veil Bridge
After several twists and turns, the Simone Veil Bridge will finally be inaugurated next summer. 5 years of work - with several delays due to complications - were necessary to transform this 550-meter-long structure that connects Bordeaux, Bègles, and Floirac. Starting in July, it will open its 2x2 lanes to vehicles, its 4-meter-wide bidirectional cycle path, and lanes dedicated to public transport. Not to mention its vast pedestrian promenade offering breathtaking views of the city bordered by the Garonne. The most ambitious project of recent years is led by the OMA Dutch agency.

The launch of the High Level Service Bus (BHNS)
After many years of waiting and significant city works, the new express bus line 100% electric will come to life in the first quarter of 2024. Highly anticipated in the transportation landscape, it will connect Saint-Aubin de Médoc to Bordeaux's Saint-Jean train station in just 1 hour passing through Mérignac, Eysines, Le Haillan, Saint-Médard-en-Jalles, and Le Taillan-Médoc, with a total of 42 stations. An efficient and alternative transportation solution to individual cars, expecting up to 50,000 passengers per day with estimated passage frequencies every 5 minutes during peak hours. Project cost? 154.6 million euros funded by the Métropole.
New pools for the Bordeaux metropolitan area
Facing a shortage of aquatic facilities in the metropolitan area, a pools plan has been established. Currently, the area has 24 municipal pools. The goal? A pool within a 15-minute reach for all residents of Bordeaux Métropole. In this ambitious initiative, some pools will be renovated, such as the Judaïque Jean Boiteux pool, which will undergo work to make it more energy-efficient, accessible, welcoming, and practical. Others will be created. 7 new pools will open by 2025: Bruges and a new UCPA complex in Bordeaux-Belcier, as well as Pessac and Lormont in 2025.
The greening of Place Stalingrad
As the gateway to the right bank of Bordeaux, the famous Place du Lion is also going to undergo a redesign. The aim is to transform this intersection into a peaceful and more serene living space. As part of this plan, the city will reduce motorized traffic, revitalize commercial activity, and extend the calming effects from the Pont de Pierre to Place Stalingrad. To accommodate the expected 50,000 new residents, the square will also be equipped with play areas for children and shaded lawns for picnicking. A new traffic layout is being considered to reduce pollution and noise levels.
Like Ramblas on the Allées de Tourny
A phase of reflection has begun. Transforming the Allées de Tourny into a Bordeaux-style Ramblas: that's the idea of Pierre Hurmic. With a hyper-central location and huge potential (as evidenced by the success of the now missed Epicurean events), the Allées de Tourny deserve, according to the Mayor, to be revitalized and perhaps partially pedestrianized. A consultation is currently underway to make this place a more lively thoroughfare where restaurants would be at the heart of the square. However, patience will be needed as the work is not expected to start until 2027.
The first steps of the Bordeaux-Toulouse High-Speed Rail
Here again, patience will be required as only the first works will start in 2024. The completion is expected for 2032. But let's not get discouraged. The Bordeaux-Toulouse High-Speed Rail (LGV) will indeed see the light of day after many controversies. The Grand Railway Project of the Southwest (GPSO) includes not only the Bordeaux-Toulouse line in 1 hour and 10 minutes compared to 2 hours and 20 minutes currently, but also Bordeaux-Dax as well as railway upgrades south of Bordeaux and north of Toulouse.
