We can all agree that until now, it was super convenient to travel by train for one simple reason: you could take as much luggage as you wanted, as long as the traveler could carry it all by themselves. So, there was no guilt in going on vacation in the South with everything you own in your suitcases or even moving from Nice to Paris with, quite literally, everything you own in your bags. However, we regret to inform you that SNCF has revised its luggage policy, and starting September 15, you'll need to travel a lot lighter.

Only three pieces of luggage allowed

If these new limitations had been put in place on February 15, there was a grace period until September 15. What do these new regulations mean? Starting mid-September, you will now be allowed only three pieces of luggage at most. But beware, there’s a catch: out of these three bags, two can be cabin luggage with a maximum size of 70 cm x 90 cm x 50 cm. The last one can be a handbag that must not exceed 40 cm x 30 cm x 15 cm.

« And my bag...

ssette, my bike, my cello? » No worries! Luggage considered as "special" can be taken along, as long as it doesn’t exceed 130 cm x 90 cm. This includes folded strollers and scooters, musical instruments, surfboards, snowboards, and skis. Bikes need to be disassembled and packed in a cover with a label meant for this purpose. If you travel with special luggage, you’re allowed a cabin suitcase, your special luggage, and a carry-on bag.

Penalties for non-compliance?

What are the risks if you don’t follow these rules? Fines. Expect to pay €10 if your bike isn’t properly disassembled and stored. On TGV, Ouigo, and Intercity trains, it will be €50 if the rules are not followed.

For travelers on TGV Inoui with larger luggage, SNCF has launched a new service called  "My Luggage", which allows you to transport your bags from point A to point B. Prices start at €32. How does it work ? 48 hours before your departure, you’ll receive labels to attach to your bags, and then a courier will come to pick them up. They will then be dropped off at the location you selected, during the time slot of your choice. Meanwhile, you can travel lighter !
