In Bordeaux, some institutions transcend time without losing their soul. This is true for Panajou, founded in 1865 and over the decades has become an essential reference for photography enthusiasts. As the store celebrates its 160th birthday, it proudly claims the title of the oldest photo shop in France still in operation, and perhaps one of the oldest in the world.

Panajou, the reference since 1865
The story begins with Henri Panajou, a former ship cook turned photographer. A visionary, he became interested early on in innovations related to imagery and passed his passion on to his sons, Rémi and Fernand.
By the end of the 19th century, the Panajou brothers revolutionized their industry: creating cameras, mail-order sales, installment payments, and publishing a magazine dedicated to amateur photographers… Long before the arrival of market giants, this Bordeaux-based company was bursting with innovations and established itself as a pioneer in commerce.

A House of Photography in the Heart of Bordeaux
Throughout its history, the Panajou house has moved several times, spanning a few addresses on the sidewalks of the Allees de Tourny, until it settles at number 32 in 2024 to showcase its final gem. With nearly 300 m² spread across multiple levels open to the public, this place goes beyond just a simple shop. Cameras, camcorders, lenses and accessories share space with a film development lab, an exhibition area, a specialized library, and places dedicated to meetups and workshops.

More than 5,000 references are available for sale, from simple disposable cameras to professional bodies that can reach €20,000.

Like a high-end living space dedicated to image
Film development, photo prints, digitization, ID photos, exhibitions, conferences, photowalks, or workshops: Panajou has transformed into a true community hub and expert in imagery.

The store also features a Leida salon, filled with exhibitions and free events open to the public. All of this is set in a contemporary decor designed by Bordeaux architect Fabien Pédelaborde, blending stylish furniture, historical archives, and iconic items from the shop, including some newly acquired pieces to recreate the brand's heritage collection. Like the vintage telephone from the shop's early days that has become legendary.

A Bordeaux heritage that's always on the move
Today present in Bordeaux, Paris, Toulouse, and Nice, the house led by Baptiste Pietruszewski continues to write its story while preserving its heritage.

In the age of smartphones and artificial intelligence, this Bordeaux institution shows that there's still a place for image enthusiasts, film lovers, and curious minds who walk through the door to discover 160 years of photographic innovations.
