Bordeaux: A Free School Supply Kit
As 16,930 students prepare to head back to public school this Monday, September 2nd, Pierre Hurmic has announced free school supplies for all first-grade students! This initiative means a savings of nearly €50 per child for families. Overall, the city of Bordeaux is investing more than €32,000 to promote social and educational diversity, giving all students the same opportunities across all neighborhoods in the city.

Promoting Equal Opportunities
“In light of the rising cost of living, I wanted the City of Bordeaux to take action to support family purchasing power. The school supplies that will be distributed to all first graders in Bordeaux's public elementary schools reflect our vision of education based on equal opportunities and eco-responsibility.” stated Pierre HURMIC, Mayor of Bordeaux.
Designed in collaboration with the National Education system, respecting the pedagogical freedom of each teacher, this package includes:
- three ballpoint pens
- two washable markers
- a box of 12 felt tip pens
- three glue sticks
- one pencil
- an eraser
- a highlighter
- colored pencils.
- rounded-tip scissors
- a pencil sharpener
- a double-decimeter ruler
- a slate board
- a stainless steel water bottle
These items, mostly made in France and eco-friendly, contain no endocrine disruptors in most cases.
