The town center of Eysines is now at 20 km/h !
As of February 26, 2025, the city of Eysines in Gironde has adopted a new traffic plan for its town, marking a turning point in terms of soft mobility. The historical heart of the commune is now designated as a shared area, where the maximum speed limit is reduced to 20 km/h. This initiative aims to soothe traffic and provide a safer, more pleasant environment for pedestrians and cyclists. The goal? To reconnect with the village spirit that the city aims to preserve.
Minor changes with delightful consequences
The work was carried out during the winter school holidays, and the signage, featuring pictograms and blue signs, is now in place. The project deeply transforms the layout of the streets: five of them d.become à one-way, while a large meeting area spreads across a big part of the center.

Rediscover a more peaceful village spirit
In this area, pedestrians have top priority (except for the tram), while motor vehicles are limited to 20 km/h. The shared space encourages everyone to coexist happily together. A bike lane in both directions has also been created on one-way streets, with some exceptions.
This reorganization, the result of a shared reflection, aims to ensure safety while respecting the city's rich historical heritage, with its narrow streets that sometimes lack sidewalks. The mayor, Serge Tournerie, explains: “Unlike other towns, our city center was not built in the 1950s-1970s. We have inherited an intact historical neighborhood that needs to be preserved while providing safety and tranquility.”
The new plan will be tested until the summer holidays, and an assessment will be conducted in June-July to evaluate its effectiveness.
