San Juan de Gaztelugatxe: the most spectacular getaway in northern Spain, just 3.5 hours from Bordeaux. Nestled between Bakio and Bermeo, and only 40 minutes from Bilbao, this exceptional natural site is free to access and can be explored after a short hike. Upon arrival, a chapel perched 150 meters above the Cantabrian Sea rewards your efforts, right in the heart of a landscape sculpted by the waves.

A natural gem in the heart of the Basque Country
Considered one of the most beautiful sites in Biscay, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe impresses with its almost unreal scenery: rugged cliffs, rocky arches, deep sea, and sacred silence. Designated a protected biotope since 1998 and a special conservation area since 2013, this islet is entirely preserved and can be accessed only on foot. Climbing the 241 steps leads to an hermitage that probably dates back to the 9th century, having been rebuilt several times after fires, looting, and battles.

A place of legends, sailors, and miracles
This spiritual haven, the hermitage, is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Tradition says that you should ring the bell three times to attract good luck and ward off evil spirits. Inside, models of boats and ex-votos remind us of the site's importance to Basque fishermen, who still symbolically circle the islet before setting sail.
The rock also bears the supposed mark of the last step of Saint John, imprinted in the stone at the final step of the staircase— a footprint that many touch for good fortune.

On the Footsteps of Game of Thrones
Since 2017, the popularity of this spot has skyrocketed: San Juan de Gaztelugatxe served as the backdrop for Dragonstone, the castle of Daenerys Targaryen. While special effects added fortresses and dragons, the site's fantastic appearance, its winding path, and its solitary rock were more than enough to justify this iconic cinematic choice.
Hiking, Access, and Practical Tips
Access is only on foot from the parking lots located up high. There are two possible routes:
-
a short but very steep path starting from the Eneperi restaurant,
-
a longer and steadier path...
The walk lasts about 1 hour and 15 minutes round trip and covers nearly 3 km. Don't forget to bring: comfortable shoes, water, and a respectful attitude towards the wildlife and plants. Entry is free, but it's recommended to book your access during peak season. In autumn and spring, the site returns to a tranquil calm that enhances its mystique.

How to get there from Bordeaux?
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is about 3.5 hours by car, following the A63 and then the BI-631 from Bilbao. Seasonal buses also connect Bakio and Bermeo to the islet, making it easy to embark on this journey through time, a gentle physical challenge, a place of beliefs, maritime stories, and raw magic. With every step climbed, the sea roars, the wind rises, and the spectacle becomes complete. A unique site in the world, where you always come back a little transformed.
