SNCF is looking into the feasibility of a daily round trip between Bordeaux and Lyon. This idea isn't new, but it's seriously back on the table. According to La Nouvelle République, the rail company has launched new studies to connect these two major cities in France with a direct high-speed line. The aim: to link the 500 kilometers separating the capital of the Gauls from the Sleeping Beauty without going through Paris and without losing a whole day.
A journey operated by Ouigo at an attractive price
It's the low-cost version of SNCF, Ouigo, that should operate the connection. The journey, taking around five hours, would serve several key stations: Massy TGV, Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, and Poitiers. The departure would take place every morning from Lyon, with a return from Bordeaux in the
- one million passengers per year, before considering a second daily round trip if demand follows.
This new line could become a strong link in the ecological transition. At a time when domestic flights are increasingly being scrutinized, this connection would offer a fast, affordable, and low-carbon alternative to link two major economic hubs. It’s bound to charm both professionals and weekend travelers while easing the congestion on clogged roads.
A TGV to bring the big cities closer together
This project is part of a broader desire to connect metropolitan areas without going through Paris. After the success of the direct lines from Lyon to Rennes and Marseille to Nantes, this future Bordeaux-Lyon TGV connection could reshape the travel map in France.Just a little more patience : if everything goes as planned, the first train could whistle its departure as early as 2027. In the meantime, let’s keep dreaming of an express journey between hidden passageways and vineyards.
