1500 lanterns illuminate the heritage of Bayonne
Every year, the city of Bayonne shines with a thousand lights as 1500 giant lanterns are released along the banks of the Nive River. The lantern release in Bayonne is a must-see event as Christmas approaches, bringing together thousands of locals and tourists.
This year, the dates are set for Saturday, December 9 (themed on animated films) and 16 (themed on tradition) at 7:30pm on the docks. For one magical evening, become part of the Christmas festivities by participating in this enchanting event in the heart of Bayonne's heritage.
A last year already missed
The lanterns made of rice paper, bamboo, and cords are 100% biodegradable. Although environmentally friendly, the event can be dangerous and cause risks of fire spreading. Sad news for the faithful of this event that enchants young and old. A prefectural decree dated November 2022 prohibits the release of lanterns in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
