The conclusion is clear: becoming a homeowner in Bordeaux has now become quite a challenge. A global study conducted by Remitly, published in November 2025, places the Girondine capital in the top 10 of the least accessible cities in Europe for buying a home, alongside Paris and Nice. This ranking fuels the debate about the real estate pressure in French metropolises.

The study compares over 150 cities worldwide, analyzing local average salaries, real estate prices, and standard mortgage criteria to assess how much of a property a buyer – whether single or in a couple – can reasonably afford.

Bordeaux, Europe’s 10th least accessible city

According to Remitly, a single Bordeaux resident could only finance 51% of the price of an average home in their city. Even a couple, pooling their income and savings, would only reach 103%, just... you to acquire a standard property. A fragile balance that illustrates the skyrocketing prices, despite a recently stabilized market.

A French Trio in the Red

France appears in the top 10 three times:

  • Paris, at the top of the ranking, where a solo buyer can finance only 35% of a property;

  • Nice, the fourth least accessible city;

  • Bordeaux, in tenth place, confirming the price surge in the South-West.

The study also highlights the similar difficulties faced in Porto, Lisbon, London, and Barcelona, all very attractive metropolises.où the demand far exceeds the supply.

A crisis of accessibility that crosses borders

On a global scale, Detroit is the most affordable city to become a homeowner, while San José, Los Angeles, and Long Beach are among the least accessible. In Europe, it's the German cities that are doing the best: seven of them appear in the top 10 most affordable cities on the continent, according to the same methodology.
