Bordeaux: The Lion Square Gets a Makeover
In Bordeaux, Stalingrad Square, previously dominated by traffic, is gearing up for a spectacular transformation. By 2027, it will showcase a whole new look, greener, calmer and definitely focused on gentle mobility.
Since February 2022, the square has been closed to cars, and the first works have already begun to prepare the ground. This unprecedented project is designed to transform this intersection into a peaceful living space. The total budget reaches 5 million euros, and includes improvements on the Deschamps and Queyries quays.

A New Green Lung in the City
One of the main goals of this transformation is the renaturation of the space. 4,220 m² of impermeable ground will be removed to make way for vegetation. 53 trees, along with thousands of plants, will enhance the landscape, promoting biodiversity and providing a refreshing oasis in the heart of the city. Naturally, this project addresses an ecological challenge and aims to contribute to the fight against climate change.
The redesign will also focus on the safety and comfort of users : wider bike paths, expanded sidewalks, and new spaces dedicated to pedestrians and tram travelers will be created. The platforms will be designed to...belvedere, with an unobstructed view of the Garonne.
The large-scale construction project will kick off in April 2025, and in 2 years, Stalingrad Square will transform into a new green lung for the people of Bordeaux.
