At a press conference to share his wishes, Pierre Hurmic, the mayor of Bordeaux, announced a new parking fee based on vehicle weight in Bordeaux. Starting in 2025, heavier vehicles, especially SUVs and other big cars, will have to pay more to park in the city. "The direction of history is to favor smaller cars in the city," the mayor stated, referring to electric city cars, emphasizing that they take up less space, pollute less, and are safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

This measure is inspired by a policy recently adopted in Paris, where the parking fees for vehicles over 1.6 tons have tripled since October 2024. Although Pierre Hurmic hasn’t specified the details of the Bordeaux system yet (like the date and exact fees), he promises to reveal them on January 28th, during the municipal budget vote. This new tax will also help to replenish the city’s finances while continuing the goal of a greener and more peaceful city.
