The biggest green paradise in the Bassins à Flot
A little while back, the city of Bordeaux unveiled its exciting new plan to create a huge green space by transforming the former submarine base into a 4-hectare park. That's as big as Parc Rivière!
The Bacalan Park project comes with a hefty price tag of over 8 million euros. The area used to be artificial, abandoned, and dominated by various businesses and structures. The goal now is to make the space more natural, diverse, and teeming with plant life by incorporating 3 hectares of permeable surfaces. They're using native and existing plants, creating pathways for visitors to stroll through the park and connect directly to the entrance of the submarine base and the circus school. This completes the pedestrian path around the Bassins à Flot. By reducing the amount of impermeable surface, the aim is to restore the natural water cycle, allowing rainwater to soak into the ground.
A refreshing oasis with boules courts, exhibitions, and video mapping
After lots of hard work, the park is scheduled to open its first section to the public by the end of 2024 and be fully completed by 2025. A total of 377 trees will be planted, along with 1 public restroom, 2 boules courts, 1 dog park, a 750m2 stage area in the center, and a 300m2 usable terrace, close to the play area. Sounds like it's going to be a fantastic new addition to the city! So, what's in store at the new green space in the Bassins à Flots? Well, there are lots of fun activities to enjoy like hanging out at the café, catching a show at the puppet theater, and more! You'll also find two drinking fountains and a well for watering the park. Exciting events like exhibitions and video mapping projections are set to take place here, making it a hub for cultural happenings. This project is all part of the "Bordeaux Grandeur Nature" initiative, which aims to create a greener and more resilient city in the face of climate change. Sounds like a great place to explore and connect with nature!
