A New Street for Children in Bordeaux

A brand new "Street for Children" has made its way to Bordeaux, in the Chartrons district. Just inaugurated this morning by the mayor, Rua Aristides de Sousa Mendes has transformed: 33% more pedestrian areas, 58% more green spaces, tables and benches to hang out, a fountain, and plenty of play areas — an athletics track, hopscotch, and wooden pathways.

What's the goal? To provide a shared living space where relaxation, safety, and physical activity can all flourish.

A program that expands across the city

With 66 Bordeaux schools already involved, the "Street for Kids" is part of a broader initiative to pedestrianize school areas. The idea is to close the street to cars in the morning and evening, or even on a permanent basis, to reduce pollution, encourage gentle mobility, and promote interactions between families.

At the same time, the City continues to green its schoolyards: 11 new "wild gardens" have opened this school year, bringing the total number of cool and lush spaces to 47. In total, 16,950 students have returned to the 119 public schools in Bordeaux, in an environment designed for their safety, health, and blossoming.
