All of Andernos is going to 30

Andernos-les-Bains is joining the movement and following several other cities in the Bordeaux metropolis by opting for a 30 zone. This is a road safety measure aimed at slowing down vehicle speeds to reduce the risk of accidents. In recent days, municipal teams have been installing new signage and carrying out the necessary road markings to implement this speed limit.

Catherine Brisset, the deputy responsible for safety, advocates for this initiative, highlighting that it truly represents "calm in traffic". She also notes that this measure aligns with the goal of "sharing road usage", especially in neighborhoods like Le Mauret, Le Bétey, or the new housing developments, where fast traffic in the heart of these residential areas is no longer acceptable.

According to the latest report from the World Health Organization (WHO), in the case of a collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian or cyclist..., the risk of death is eight times lower when speed is reduced from 50 to 30 km/h. These figures support the municipality's decision, which hopes to enhance the safety of the residents, especially the most vulnerable among them such as pedestrians and cyclists.

A new speed limit under pressure

While this measure is applauded by some for its safety aspect, it also faces criticism from the residents of Andernos. In just a few days, a petition was launched to denounce this generalized shift to 30 km/h. The initiator of this petition calls for a "more in-depth discussion", arguing that less drastic solutions could be found that are better adapted to the needs of the community. According to him, it would be possible to find compromises so that such a generalized restriction isn't imposed. Already, 812 signatures have been collected.
