Bordeaux mourns the loss of its former mayor, Nicolas Florian

A figure in local politics, Nicolas Florian passed away this Sunday due to complications from a stroke he suffered last Friday while on his way to work. He succeeded his mentor, Alain Juppé, in 2019 after Juppé’s surprise departure to the Constitutional Council.

Even though he was elected mayor by the city council, he was unable to win the city in 2020 against ecologist Pierre Hurmic, despite an alliance with the Macronist camp. Since then, he had remained a strong voice of the opposition, calling for a renewal of this alliance for the 2026 municipal elections.

Born in Marmande in Lot-et-Garonne in 1969.

Very close to Valérie Pécresse, he presented himself as a down-to-earth man, in opposition to "local snobbery". His career was marked by his role as Deputy for Finance under Juppé, before running for mayor with the desire to connect more with the people of Bordeaux on a daily basis.

On behalf of the entire municipal team and all Bordeaux residents, I extend my condolences to his loved ones, his wife, and his son. I want to express our deep emotion in light of this tragedy. Throughout his political career in Bordeaux, both as an assistant and as mayor, Nicolas Florian worked with a strong sense of commitment to serve the people of Bordeaux. I honor the memory of a determined politician. His untimely departure leaves a huge void in the Bordeaux city council. »
