The Ambès Marathon, also known as the flattest marathon in France, will host the 2026 French Championships. The French Athletics Federation has chosen this race for its ultra-smooth course and its organization, which was already praised during its first edition that brought together nearly 2,500 participants.
A young marathon… but already a must in Gironde
Last year, the Marathon des 2 Rives made a strong impression: a well-managed first edition, a winner in 2:12, and runners captivated by a course designed for performance. This year, the event is stepping up! “It's quite flattering to be called by the FFA,” shares Céline Champion, co-organizer at Time2Sports. The presence of the French elite is expected to attract an exceptional lineup and perhaps even a new record on the roads of Ambès.

A path in 8… and only 10 meters of elevation difference
The course, unchanged, fits the landscapes of the Ambès peninsula: downtown, banks of the Garonne and then the Dordogne, with long straight lines that encourage a good rhythm. Its special feature already gives it a great reputation: only 10 meters of elevation over 42.195 km. “It’s the sum of all the sidewalks,” smiles Céline Champion. This flat profile naturally attracts personal record seekers, as well as runners looking for an accessible, smooth, and straightforward marathon.
The program spans two days:
-
Saturday, May 2: 5 km and 10 km in semi-nighttime
-
Sunday, May 3 : The semi-marathon starts at 8 AM and the marathon, part of the French Championships, kicks off at 9 AM. Online registrations are already open, and attendance is expected to rise with the announcement of national certification.
