Krakatoa, an emblematic venue for contemporary music located in Mérignac, is about to turn a new page in its history. After a significant renovation, the building is set to be completed on May 30th, ahead of a public reopening planned for September 10th with a first concert by the musician Mezerg.
Krakatoa Mérignac: an expanded and reimagined venue
A major transformation for Krakatoa? The increase in its capacity, going from 1,200 to 1,445 spectators. The main hall has been completely redesigned with two levels of side balconies, prioritizing the comfort and visibility for the audience.

Another exciting new feature: the creation of a Club, a cozy second room located on the first floor, with a capacity of 260 people. This new space will allow for concerts in a format that's more intimate and closer to the audience. "The venue will now offer several distinct areas, unlike before when there was only one, paving the way for more artistic formats and events," Gabriel, the communications manager, shares with us.
New Spaces for Creation and Mediation
The project also aims to strengthen the cultural missions of the stage, particularly in the areas of music diffusion, cultural mediation, and artistic support.

A modernized and more responsible building
Beyond the spaces, the building has been completely updated. The new Krakatoa aims to be brighter, featuring large glass surfaces, and will now open up to an outdoor area designed with a shared square. The renovation also incorporates more responsible equipment, including the installation of photovoltaic panels.
The total cost of the project amounts to 8 million euros, funded by the City of Mérignac, with support from the DRAC and the Region.
