In Bordeaux and its surroundings, several places allow you to enjoy some coolness while discovering the rich heritage and beautiful nature of the Gironde region.

The Bassins des Lumières: art… in the cool

With their vast rooms located in a former submarine base, the Bassins des Lumières remain one of the best retreats from the heat. The interior naturally maintains a pleasant temperature throughout the year. It's a great way to combine refreshment and artistic immersion.


The Air-Conditioned Museums of Bordeaux

The Aquitaine Museum, the CAPC, the Bordeaux Museum, and the City of Wine offer a cool break while exploring the cultural treasures of the city. As a bonus, many temporary exhibitions are available all summer long!


The Padirac Chasm, a steady 13°C all year round

Less than 3 hours from Bordeaux, the Padirac Chasm offers one of the most refreshing experiences of the summer. At a delightful 103 meters underground, the temperature remains steady at a cool 13°C, even when it's soaring over 40°C outside.


The Lakes of Gironde

Lake Lacanau, Lake Carcans-Hourtin, Lake Cazaux-Sanguinet, and Lake Hostens are perfect for cooling off while enjoying waters that are often calmer than the ocean. They're an ideal alternative for families.


The Ocean Beaches

When the ocean breeze blows, the beaches of Porge, Lacanau, Grand Crohot, Carcans, or Soulac-sur-Mer often offer a few precious degrees cooler than Bordeaux. However, be cautious of the heatwaves and the risk of waves.

The Land of Gascony Forest

Municipal Swimming Pools

When the heat becomes overwhelming, nothing beats a refreshing plunge. Several pools in Bordeaux Metropolis stay open all summer long, including Galin, Judaïque, Grand Parc, and Tissot. It’s also a great chance to check out the Jean Zay pool in Caudéran, the first outdoor heated pool in the metropolis.

Air-Conditioned Libraries

Not often recognized for this purpose, municipal libraries make fantastic havens during heat waves. You can settle in for several hours at no charge.

Movie Theaters

Spending two or three hours in an air-conditioned room is a great way to forget about the heat. Multiplexes and independent cinemas offer a summer lineup that's perfect for those hottest days.

Shopping Centers

Mériadeck, Bordeaux-Lac, Rives d'Arcins, and Mérignac Soleil are all beloved spots when temperatures become hard to bear.

Wine Cellars

Some wineries offer tours of their cellars, naturally cool thanks to stone walls and semi-buried designs. It's a lovely getaway that also allows you to explore the wine heritage of the Bordeaux region.


Note: During heatwaves, authorities recommend staying hydrated regularly, avoiding outings between 12 PM and 4 PM, favoring air-conditioned or shaded areas, and regularly checking in on the more vulnerable individuals.
