The new Jean Zay swimming pool, located where the old Stéhélin seasonal pool used to be, marks an important milestone in the swimming pool plan initiated by the City and the Metropolis over the past ten years, with a clear goal: to modernize facilities, enhance their environmental performance, and improve accessibility.

A Nordic pool open 365 days a year

The big news at this entirely revamped site is a Nordic outdoor pool, kept at a constant temperature of 27°C, even in winter. Stretching 25 meters and featuring 6 swimming lanes, it allows for outdoor swimming all year round, a first for Bordeaux.

Unlike indoor pools, this type of installation requires less energy since it doesn’t need dehumidification or heating of the surrounding air.

Modern Equipment and Energy-Efficient

Designed with sustainability in mind, the Jean Zay pool includes several systems to minimize its environmental impact. The water is heated by heat pumps, while photovoltaic panels installed on the building’s roof contribute to the site’s energy autonomy. The project, entrusted to the Baudin-Chateauneuf company, represents a total investment of 9.17 million euros.

A Living Space for the Whole Family

Beyond serious swimming, the Jean Zay pool aims to be an accessible space for everyone. A water play area.

Dedicated to children has been arranged with 2 sunrooms, one of which is green, for relaxing on lovely days. A dining area complements the offering, with activities planned during the summer season.

Situated in the heart of the Caudéran neighborhood, this local facility aims to become a vibrant place open for extended hours and welcoming to everyone.

The pool is named after Jean Zay, a major political figure of the 20th century, best known for helping to make physical and sports education mandatory in schools.
