Pierre Hurmic is taking a step back. Bordeaux will now shine at night, but with an emphasis on energy sobriety. In January 2023, the city took a significant turn towards energy conservation, with a partial shutdown of street lighting. The goal: to save energy, protect biodiversity, and reduce light pollution.

Bordeaux listens to its citizens and turns the lights back on

But in response to the concerns of residents, the municipality is revising its approach! By March 2025, lighting will be extended until 2:30 AM throughout the city, ensuring more safety and comfort for the people of Bordeaux. The town hall promises that 90% of nighttime journeys will take place in well-lit areas.

A fantastic 26% reduction in energy consumption, €1.2 million in savings over 2 years, and a more eco-friendly city are the positive outcomes shared by the town hall following this partial switch-off. This effort also enables faster investments in a more sustainable and resilient city, tackling energy challenges head-on. It's a big step towards achieving the goal of 41% energy autonomy by 2026!

A comprehensive program for smart and responsible street lighting

The revitalization of street lighting is already underway: nearly 2000 streetlights will be converted to LED each year, and innovations like solar energy and presence detection will illuminate Bordeaux in a whole new way. Currently made up of 30% LED lamps, the 32,000 streetlights in Bordeaux will integrate even more innovative features (dimming, presence detection, solar energy) to shine brighter!

Conjugate energy sobriety, biodiversity, and security. Today, the streets of Bordeaux are already equipped with 162 solar streetlights (18 in 2019) and 555 streetlights with presence detection (300 in 2019).
