Bruges lifts its foot and goes into 30 km/h zone
Back to school season brings new resolutions! In this spirit, Bruges is choosing to limit speed to 30 km/h. With the exception of major roads (Avenue du Général de Gaulle, Avenue de l’Europe, Route du Médoc, and Boulevard Jacques Chaban-Delmas...), all streets will be subject to this limit. Checks are being carried out by local and national police to ensure the new signage is being respected.

A better coexistence and a more peaceful environment
For the past 20 years, around 200 cities have adopted the 30 km/h speed limit, like Lille, Toulouse, Montpellier, Nantes, Strasbourg, and Grenoble. The goal? To reduce pollution, lower the number of accidents, rethink the sharing of public space by encouraging soft mobility, and provide a better quality of life for residents. While many drivers grumble about this measure, numerous locals have lamented the excessive speeds in the city.
Reversing what has been established is never easy. It can be a tough pill to swallow, but it's important to think about the collective scale. In the long run, Road Safety is considering limiting the entire French network to 30 km/h. This could be one of the themes in the 2026 municipal elections. Doubts linger!
