A not-so-flattering ranking
Every year, Holidu, a vacation rental platform, publishes its ranking of the best airports in Europe by compiling travelers' Google reviews. For this 2025 edition, Istanbul (Turkey) takes the lead, followed by Porto (Portugal) and Helsinki (Finland). Bordeaux-Mérignac ranks 84th out of 85, just ahead of Heraklion (Greece).
With over 17,000 reviews, the Bordeaux airport boasts an average of 3 stars out of 5. Recurring criticisms highlight the poor organization of the drop-off parking and Terminal Billi, dedicated to low-cost flights, which has been under construction since January 2025.
Rankings come and go, but they're not the same
The ranking is based on the analysis of travelers' Google reviews and ratings. According to the management, it doesn't reflect the reality.
current. « Google's indicators weigh 15 years of reviews, long before improvements, without considering the dynamics of the last 3 years », explains Simon Dreschel, chairman of the board at France 3.Because while Holidu's study tarnishes the image of Bordeaux Airport, others elevate it. This is the case with the German site AirHelp, which assesses punctuality, services, and customer feedback, and ranks Bordeaux 5th French airport, 44th in Europe and 135th in the world, with an average score of 7.51/10. Another survey conducted by BestBrokers officially names it the most punctual in France, and 8th in Europe, with less than 20% of departures delayed or canceled out of the total 25,000 flights recorded.
A transformation of 240 million euros
Often criticized for its archaic infrastructure and lack of services, Bordeaux-Mérignac is currently undergoing major renovations. In addition to the renovation of Terminal Billi, a new building connecting halls A and B is set to open in 2026 to streamline traffic and enhance passenger comfort. In total, 240 million euros will be invested by 2028 to modernize the airport. This is a great opportunity to hope for improvement in future rankings and to shed its label as the "poor student" of Europe.
