It's official, there are more traffic jams in Bordeaux than in Paris

Thunderbolt! In 2024, Bordeaux claims the top spot among the most congested cities in France, according to the GPS company TomTom's ranking, with a average congestion rate of 33%. The capital of the Gironde region even ranks 24th in the world, with 113 hours spent in traffic in a year (up from 111 last year), which is equivalent to 4.7 days. The daily commute in the metropolis has become quite a challenge: at 10 AM, covering 10 km can take up to 33 minutes, averaging 17.8 km/h.

On the national level, Bordeaux takes the crown, followed by Paris in 45th place and Marseille in 63rd, rounding out the podium.

Priority to soft mobility!

Driven by the municipality led by Pierre Hurmic, Bordeaux is striving to reduce car usage in the city. Since 2024, 12 hectares of the city center...ont been pedestrianized, the bike lanes are multiplying and the traffic light system has been enhanced, especially along the quays. The goal is clear: reduce the space for cars to promote green transport. However, these changes, sometimes poorly received by local residents, complicate traffic and parking. This is reflected in the parking fees in the city center, which now hover around €15 for 4 hours.

Everyone has their own method of analysis

Traffic in Bordeaux gets worse year after year. The situation is obvious, and the numbers speak for themselves. But not all statistics are the same. Earlier this week, we reported that Bordeaux was the 3rd most congested city in France, behind Paris and Marseille according to the "Global Traffic Scorecard" conducted by the Inf.o-trafic American Inrix. This latest number shows that Bordelais lost 54 hours in traffic jams in 2023. The study even claims that congestion has decreased by 8% since 2023 and by 13% since 2022.
