This is an announcement that’s going to create quite a stir: all the beaches in Gironde will require a fee starting this summer. This decision was made by the regional prefecture and local authorities as part of a management and protection project for coastal areas. Beginning June 1, 2025, a 5€ access fee per person will be applied to all beaches, from the Côte d’Argent to Grand Crohot, from the Lagoon beach to the famous Arcachon beach. This measure aims to preserve the environment and improve infrastructure.

5€ Entry Fee for Swimming

According to the prefecture, “this new policy is primarily a response to ecological challenges and land use management. The massive attendance at the beaches is harming our natural environment, and it is our duty to act to preserve our coastlines while offering visitors a quality experience.” A control system will be established to ensure that attendance remains manageable, especially on busy days.and affluence.

A moderate access to empower users

The funds generated by this initiative will be invested in projects for the preservation of coastal ecosystems, as well as in improving infrastructure: restrooms, showers, facilities for people with reduced mobility, and other comfort services.

Access conditions and rates

The beaches will now be equipped with automatic ticket machines at each entrance. Vacationers will need to purchase a ticket online or on-site. The base rate will be €5 per person, while large families and groups will benefit from a reduced rate of €15 for 4 people. Children under 12 years old will be exempt from payment.

Season passes will also be offered at €50 for the summer, allowing unlimited access to all the beaches in the region. These passes will be available online starting May 15, with a special launch price of €40 for the first buyers.

A d…cute;decision that sparks debate

The announcement of this measure has sparked mixed reactions. While some applaud the ecological initiative, others are concerned about the impact on low-income families. Claude Martin, a representative from the "Save Our Beaches" association, commented: "We understand the need to protect the environment, but this measure could exclude many people, especially those who can’t afford to pay daily for access to the sea."

On their side, professionals in the tourism sector, although surprised by this late announcement, claim to be ready to adapt. "This will impact tourist influx, but it could also breathe new life into lesser-known beaches, providing better service quality to vacationers," explains Sophie Leroux, president of the Coastal Hoteliers Association.

As many cities along the European coast adopt similar policies, Gironde seems to be taking the lead in sustainable beach management. The application of this...The measure starting in the summer of 2025 will mark a turning point in the management of public spaces by the seaside. But the question remains: how many locals and tourists will be willing to pay to lay their towel on the sand this summer?
