Collonges-la-Rouge, a jewel of red sandstone
Just two and a half hours from Bordeaux, in the heart of Corrèze, a dazzling village stands amidst a green oasis: Collonges-la-Rouge. Recognized among the very first Most Beautiful Villages in France, this unique village attracts nearly 250,000 visitors each year, captivated by the deep crimson hue of its walls, the richness of its history, and the elegance of its architecture.

Born from stone and the determination of a visionary man – Charles Ceyrac, the mayor – Collonges is so much more than just a postcard picture. In 1982, it was here that the association of the Most Beautiful Villages of France was founded, which now includes over 170 member communes, dedicated to protecting and enhancing the rural heritage of the country.
A Medieval Town with 25 Towers
The imprint of the Viscount of Turenne is everywhere: turrets, castles, notable residences, watchtowers… Collonges, nicknamed "the town of 25 towers," retains an ageless nobility from its medieval past. The red sandstone, colored by a high iron oxide content, lights up the cobbled streets with a unique warmth.
The Saint-Pierre church, built between the 11th and 12th centuries, marks the point that Collonges once held on the Camino de Santiago. The House of the Mermaid, the public oven, the former halls for grains and wines, and the chapel of the Black Penitents are all key stops that shape the visit and showcase a rich and vibrant heritage.

Collonges doesn’t just admire its past. Throughout the year, the village comes to life with classical concerts, street performances, night markets filled with delicious treats, artisan exhibitions, and even the bread festival or the outdoor theater festival amidst the enchanting old stones. Every summer, the storytelling evenings and theatrical tours bring local history to life with poetry and humor, entertaining both young and old.

Collonges-la-Rouge is located 2.5 hours by car from Bordeaux, 20 km south of Brive-la-Gaillarde.
The entrance to the village is free. Some guided tours and monuments have fees (4 to 6€).
Best time to visit: from April to October, to enjoy the markets, events, and the famous nights lit by torches.
