The Turquoise Oasis of the Southwest
It’s hard to believe, but this emerald-colored lagoon was once a lignite mine. Between 1978 and 1982, millions of tons of coal were extracted, leaving behind a massive cavity. Nature, with a little help from humans, has reclaimed its territory: springs, groundwater, and rain gradually filled the crater, giving birth to a 147-hectare lake, which is now the centerpiece of a nature reserve spanning 2,679 hectares.

Swimming, paddling, and chilling on white sand
Those who think the beach has to mean the ocean have never laid their towel on the white sand of Arjuzanx. The water is crystal clear, warms up quickly with the first rays of sun, and the lifeguarded swimming area in summer puts parents at ease with their kids. Paddleboarding, pedal boats, canoeing, or just soaking up the sun : here, you set your own pace, away from the hustle and bustle of more crowded spots.

Biodiversity is the key word
Beyond the joy of swimming, Arjuzanx is also a haven for biodiversity. The forests of pine, oak, and chestnut trees surround the lake, home to otters, voles, and a multitude of birds. In winter, the site becomes the stage for a unique spectacle: the wintering of thousands of cranes, local stars that attract curious visitors and photographers.
The Bordeaux Spirit, Landes Style
For the people of Bordeaux, Arjuzanx is like the chic and nature-filled plan B, the perfect alternative to the Arcachon Basin when you want to avoid traffic jams on the ring road. Here, there’s no need to choose between paddleboarding and canoeing: everything is within reach, and the vibe remains relaxed and laid-back.
