Built in the early 14th century, the belfry of Saint-Macaire was the main entrance to the fortified town. A symbol of the municipal freedoms granted to the city, it is today considered the oldest preserved belfry in Gironde. From atop this monumental gateway, you can easily imagine the vibrant energy that once animated this prosperous city, an important trading hub thanks to the Garonne River.
