Around 45 minutes from Bordeaux, nestled in the Entre-deux-Mers region, Sainte-Croix-du-Mont holds a delightful surprise for visitors. Behind its charming old houses and vineyard-dotted landscapes lies an enormous bed of fossilized oysters, a remnant from an era when the sea covered this part of Aquitaine. A spectacular natural phenomenon revealed at the foot of Tastes castle, overlooking the Garonne valley.

22 million years ago, the sea covered this Gironde village

Hard to imagine today, but Sainte-Croix-du-Mont was once submerged beneath the waves. Around 22 million years ago, during the Miocene period, oyster shells accumulated on the sea floor, gradually forming thick layers of sediment

Through geological upheavals and the sea's retreat, these deposits ended up high above sea level. Erosion then sculpted the rock, revealing a cliff made up of countless fossilized shells, some of which are still perfectly precognizable. Today, this remarkable testament to Aquitaine's geological past is one of the village's great distinctive features.

Caves carved into the clifftside to preserve wine

But the discovery doesn't stop there. Over time, cavities have been carved into this impressive oyster bed, creating caves used as natural cellars.

Their coolness is perfect for preserving the sweet white wines that have made Sainte-Croix-du-Mont famous. In summer, some even host tastings.

A 180° panorama over the Garonne and Sauternais vineyards

The walk is also worth the detour for its scenery. Built on a rocky spur, Sainte-Croix-du-Mont overlooks the Garonne valley and the Sauternais vineyards.

From the Tastes castle, built in the 14th century, a viewpoint offers a panoramic view at 180° over the surrounding landscapes. On clear days, it's even possible to spot the Pyrenees on the horizon. Among the 18th and 19th-century houses, the Sainte-Croix church and paths leading to fossils, the village is perfect for a stroll through nature, heritage and discovery.
