A Record in Numbers
With an average of 15 babies born every day, the Pellegrin maternity ward has officially become the largest maternity in metropolitan France. This level 3 facility boasts an obstetrics unit, a neonatal unit, and a pediatric and maternal resuscitation service.
The infrastructure is impressive: 71 postpartum beds, 36 beds for high-risk pregnancies, 10 kangaroo care beds, 24 gynecology beds, 14 outpatient beds, and 13 delivery rooms. "5417 births have taken place here, resulting in 5551 live births," said the communication and cultural department of the facility to the site Magic Maman.
Mayotte keeps the lead
While Bordeaux claims the top spot in mainland France, the CHU de Mamoudzou in Mayotte holds its position as the leading maternity hospital in France across all regions, with over 9,000 births per year.
A reference maternity hospital
Beyond the numbers, the CHU de Bordeaux plays a crucial role in managing high-risk pregnancies and caring for fragile newborns. This expertise attracts thousands of families each year and solidifies the institution's status as a cornerstone of the French healthcare system. This isn't the first time that the CHU de Bordeaux has made a name for itself nationally or internationally. As a reminder, it has secured the 75th spot in the ranking of the best hospitals in the world 2025 by Newsweek.
