The Sacred French Excellence in Geneva

From June 26 to 28, 2025, Geneva hosted the World Coffee Championships as part of the World of Coffee event. Among the spotlight competitions was the Ibrik coffee, a demanding discipline that celebrates the art of preparing coffee using a cezve, a small copper pot used for centuries between the Balkans and the Maghreb.

In this category, Charles Boyenval, a representative of France and trainer at the MaxiCoffee School, has really stood out. After winning the French Championships last May, he emerged victorious against competitors from Romania, Greece, and Italy to clinch the world gold.

Based in Mios, in the heart of the Arcachon Basin, Charles teaches the art of coffee to both professionals and enthusiasts. For several months, he refined his skills alongside the teams at MaxiCoffee, working on every movement and every flavor to enhance this traditional method.

"This world title recognizes not only his technical mastery and creativity but also the support from the Gironde company, which already has uA strong track record in the coffee world," explains Solène Salazar, the communications officer of the house. Last January, it was Inger Wieringa, also a trainer at MaxiCoffee, who won the French Latte Art Championship.

Ibrik Coffee: A Blend of Tradition and Innovation

One of the oldest extraction methods, Ibrik coffee leaves no room for improvisation. The judges don't just evaluate technique or heating precision; they also consider originality, cultural storytelling, and the sensory experience provided. The competitions at the World of Coffee adhere to specific criteria defined by the Specialty Coffee Association. For the Ibrik challenge, participants must present several preparations, accompanied by a technical and cultural narrative, all assessed blindly by an international jury.
