The charm of the rustic to reconnect
Last April, Célia Monseigne, the mayor of Saint-André-de-Cubzac, inaugurated a project that combines heritage, nature, and a unique experience: the "Moulin de Montalon, unusual refuge". Perched at 76 meters above sea level, on the remarkable site of Montalon, this historic windmill overlooks the Dordogne valley and the Cubzaguais. After a complete renovation, it has become the very first unusual municipal refuge of the city, available for booking free of charge since the end of June.

A heritage gem brought back to life
This mill, which was once used for grinding grain, also housed an observatory until 2010, the year when Storm Xinthia tore off its dome. Since May 2024, a meticulous restoration project has brought together local artisans—stone cutters, carpenters, and woodworkers—to breathe new life into this historical monument. The framework and shingle roof have been recreated using traditional techniques, while the furniture has been entrusted to the local association "Recycle et rénove," specialists in upcycling.

A unique experience open to everyone
The unusual refuge offers an authentic experience: no running water or electricity inside, but dry toilets are nearby. Its panoramic glass roof allows you to admire stunning sunsets over the Dordogne Valley, a breathtaking natural spectacle. Reservations are completely free (with a security deposit) and limited to one night per season, from June to October, on the city's website.

A new breath of fresh air for Montalon
This mill is the second to be renovated on the Montalon site, following the panoramic mill completed in 2024. The site is now an exceptional place where nature, history, and innovation come together. This unusual refuge promises to attract the curious, nature lovers, and heritage enthusiasts, offering unforgettable nights in a unique setting.
Reservations are open until July 31st at the end of the previous weekend. "The 46 available nights were booked in less than 48 hours. In July, we will open reservations for the next period starting from August," shares a representative from the City of Saint-André-de-Cubzac.
