The Editor

Until the end of the year, the masters of Dutch painting come alive, follow one another, and respond to each other in an original dialogue imagined by the cultural institution around a unique theme, light. A traditional subject of art that is now infinitely declined on the walls, ceilings, and water basins of this former submarine base. An unforgettable artistic experience, to be discovered as soon as possible. Make the ordinary extraordinary Draw inspiration from the small moments of life, almost magically, to make these moments exceptional, which is what the great Dutch masters have always aspired to. Paint the real, the everyday, to bring out the beauty and magic. An exercise that does not fail to remind us of what the Bassins des Lumières are striving for today. Taking "simple" canvases, and giving them life, to reveal their true nature.Give all the grace and all the power to the spectator.

Through its selection of works, the institution takes us on a journey to discover the Golden Age of Dutch painting, from its beginnings to its legacy, to highlight a timeless subject: the light of the North. Whether bright or soft, sunny or wintry, this light reveals to us.All that is hidden behind the everyday mundane, from a portrait of a young man writing a letter to the intimacy of an artist's workshop represented on a canvas. A journey through time The extensive program of the Bassins des Lumières takes us on a true odyssey, transporting us from one century to another, to discover or rediscover the greatest names in Dutch painting. Vermeer takes the stage, creating a suspended universe, like a filmmaker. After him, the light flickers, and it is Rembrandt, the master of chiaroscuro, who takes center stage.

Next, the talents follow one another. Paulus Potter, Abraham Bloemaert, Rachel Ruysch or Jan Steen, all touch us with their sense of poetry, mysticism, intimacy, and, more generally, of reality. Throughout the entire exhibition, it is a parade of immense painters, which ends with a dreamlike journey into the cosmos, at the heart of the Starry Night by Van Gogh.

In a short program, and to stay within the theme of the Netherlands, the Bassins des Lumières immerse us in Mondrian's work, who, after the Northern lights, stands out as a true master of color. As always, the canvases follow one another, blend and merge to the rhythm of a soundtrack mastered from start to finish, and one comes out of there in a trance-like state that one would be almost tempted to call ecstasy.
