Until the end of the year, the masters of Dutch painting come alive, one after another, engaging in a unique dialogue imagined by this cultural institution around a single theme, light. A traditional subject in art that today can be endlessly explored on the walls, ceilings, and water basins of this former submarine base. An unforgettable artistic experience, to be discovered as soon as possible.
Making the Ordinary Extraordinary
Dive into the little moments of life as a source of almost magical inspiration, to turn these moments into extraordinary ones—this is what the great Dutch masters have always aspired to. Painting the real, the everyday, to reveal the beauty and magic. An endeavor that reminds us of what the Bassins des Lumières aim for today. Taking “simple” canvases and bringing them to life to reveal their true essence.

Through its selection of works, the institution invites us to discover the Golden Age of Dutch painting, from its beginnings to its legacy, highlighting a timeless subject: the northern light. Whether bright or filtered, sunny or wintry, this light captivates us. reveals everything that hides behind the seemingly mundane aspects of daily life, the portrait of a young man writing a letter in the intimacy of an artist's studio captured on canvas.
A journey through time
The long program of the Bassins des Lumières takes us on a true odyssey, sweeping us from one century to another, to discover or rediscover the greatest names of Dutch painting. Vermeer sets the stage, creating an enchanted universe, much like a filmmaker. After him, the light flickers, and it is Rembrandt, the master of chiaroscuro, who takes center stage.

Next, the talents keep on coming! Paulus Potter, Abraham Bloemaert, Rachel Ruysch, and Jan Steen all touch our hearts with their sense of poetry, mysticism, intimacy, and, more generally, the real. Throughout the exhibition, there’s a parade of incredible painters, culminating in a dreamy journey into the cosmos, at the heart of Starry Night by Van Gogh.
In a short program, and staying true to the theme of the Netherlands, the Bassins des Lumières immerse us in the work of Mondrian, who, after the northern lights, emerges as a true master of color. As always, the canvases blend and harmonize with a masterfully curated soundtrack, leaving us in a state that could almost be described as a breath away from ecstasy.
