The Editor

As winter seems to never want to end and covers the sky with grayness and sadness, we invite you to fill up on shapes and colors. For that, head to the Bassins des Lumières, which will plunge you (literally) into the work of Matisse and then into that of Frida Kahlo. With monumental projections, enveloping music, and a unique immersive setting, here are two exhibitions not to be missed!

Matisse, the undisputed master of color

When he starts painting in 1889, at just 20 years old, no one could have suspected that Matisse's painting career would be so long and so prolific. Yet, at the dawn of his 80s, he will still be perpetually seeking new techniques and new ways to elevate color. It’s this production of infinite richness that the Bassins des Lumières showcase.today is honored in the new long program.

For 45 minutes, the institution takes us through Matisse's color palette to showcase the incredible power the painter infused into the different shades. One after another, each color becomes the expression of a feeling, ultimately reaching a certain transcendence in the stained glass and...eacute;alisés by the artist and presented here in a sublime scene. Blue, yellow, orange, red, green, each shade becomes the reflection of a period in the life of the painter, in a fascinating ballet.

Frida Kahlo, undisputed queen of emotions

In a second moment, the Bassins des Lumières immerse us in the vibrant work of the Mexican artist shaped by passion and freedom. Alongside the main program, this second highlight presents itself as a intimate mirror, revealing the fascinating life of Frida Kahlo. Her early works, marked by physical suffering and the search for self, gradually make way for powerful paintings, where the commitment and power of the artist burst forth. Before our eyes, the organic, plant-like, and anatomical patterns come to life, illustrating the strength of this iconic figure who knew how to transf.
Turn pain into poetry.
